COLLECTING DNA SAMPLES
PERFORMANCE CHECKLIST


The object of the "Collecting DNA Samples for the National DNA Data Bank" course is to provide candidates with the information and skills necessary to qualify according to Section 487.056(3) CC, as a peace officer able by virtue of training to collect samples for the purpose of DNA analysis.


Performance Criteria

1. Accurately explained the purpose of taking a DNA sample.
 
2. Correctly explained the sampling procedures prior to taking samples.  
3. Ensured that the environment for taking the samples was reasonably clean.  
4. Wore gloves and mask throughout the sampling procedures.  
5. Maintained sterility of equipment prior to use.  
6. Swabbed subject's finger with alcohol before penetrating skin.  
7. Correctly positioned and operated the lancet using appropriate pressure.  
8. Plucked hairs with quick precision.  
9. Obtained buccal sample using appropriate pressure and technique.  
10.Did not contaminate the blood, buccal or hair (i.e.sheath) samples by touching them with the glove or allowing the samples to come into contact with any other substance.
